Food TV Face-Off - Alton vs. Sara in the Brownie Matchup

Filed under: Food Network — Nicky @ 7:57 am

This is the Food TV Face-Off for last week, I apologize for all of the technical difficulties I have had as of late with the site.  I am still waiting on a repair at my home office, so the posting will be spotty this week, as I have to go to the local coffee shop to post anything.  I know that many of you come over just to read the Food TV Face-Off, so I am making sure I still post them.

The Face-Off for last week was brownies.  Sara Moulton’s Triple Chocolate Fudge Brownies vs. Alton Brown’s Cocoa Brownies.  This was tight matchup, probably the closest contest I have done yet.  Both recipes produced a delicious, buttery, rich, and chewy brownie.  The subtle differences were best left to each person to determine for themselves.  I will tell you which one I chose for my own personal preference, but depending on what you are looking for either of these recipes is stellar.  The major difference in these two recipes is the type of chocolate or chocolates used to produce the brownie.  Alton went the classic route with cocoa powder, something many people have readily on hand in their pantries.  Sara went with a melted chocolate recipe.  Sara’s recipe contained three types of chocolate, including unsweetened, bittersweet, and semi-sweet.  Alton’s brownies were delicious and reminiscent of my childhood, with a thick chewy top.  When it came down to texture I think Alton’s were slightly more chewy.  In the end I chose Sara’s brownies for the rounded taste of the chocolate.  Alton’s brownies were incredibly flavorful, but almost too rich to finish one whole brownie.  The cocoa powder also added a hint of sharpness.  I really liked the combination of melted chocolates that Sara chose.  Each of the chocolates helped to balance out any sharp flavoring from the others.  All in all, like I stated before I think in this case it matters what you are looking for in your brownie, either would make your children or significant other very happy.

Winner:  Sara Moulton’s Triple Chocolate Fudge Brownies - by a hair!
